New Directors to help drive BESydney’s vision

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) has welcomed two new Independent Directors, Peter Grey and Bran Black, to the strategic event bidding organisation’s Board.

 Announcing the appointments, BESydney Chair The Hon. Bruce Baird AM, said, “We underwent an exhaustive due diligence process before selecting Peter and Bran to join our Board, as we farewelled outgoing Directors Gabrielle Trainor AO and Professor Mary O'Kane AC.

 “Our new Directors add tremendous value to our organisation in the incredibly competitive international bidding environment.”

 Mr Grey has replaced Gabrielle Trainor AO as Chair of the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee.

 A former Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) CEO, Mr Grey brings a wealth of experience in foreign policy, trade and commercial issues in the Asian region, and has extensive ties with government. He is now a senior adviser on international business and foreign investment at the law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth. The appointment commenced is for a two-year term.

 “I look forward to drawing on my background as a trade official and Ambassador to help attract even more events to Sydney,” said Mr Grey. “I know that Sydney is a truly great, global city but we still need to work hard to ensure it attracts as many quality events as possible in a highly-competitive market.”

 Mr Black has replaced Professor Mary O'Kane AC as Chair of the Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee. He also joins for two years and brings significant public sector experience, and is embedded in the university sector.

 Mr Black is currently CEO of the NUW Alliance (formed by the University of Newcastle, University of New South Wales and University of Wollongong), which aims to solve some of the big challenges facing New South Wales, and in doing so generate benefits for the State and Australia.

 “Sydney is hands down the best city in the world,” said Mr Black. “I joined the BESydney Board to help Sydney leverage its many advantages to attract investment and create opportunities for generations to come.”

Mr Baird AM added: “I would like to thank Gabrielle and Mary for their tenures at BESydney. They have helped us secure some of the world’s leading international business events – events that showcase Australia’s best practice and drive global economic and social agendas.”
