US START-UP EVENT TO LAUNCH IN SYDNEY

Sunday 23 April 2017

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) CEO, Lyn Lewis-Smith today welcomed New South Wales (NSW) Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s announcement that Sydney will host the first LAUNCH Festival outside San Francisco as part of NSW’s broader innovation and start-up growth agenda.

“Hosting LAUNCH Festival in 2018 and 2019 will boost entrepreneurship and innovation by profiling the ground-breaking ideas of our local talent and increasing skills, knowledge and networks, to help new businesses flourish. Earlier this month the San Francisco event profiled start-ups in robotics, virtual reality, education, design, consumer goods and technology. LAUNCH Festival competition alumni include Fitbit, Dropbox and Yammer, so I’m excited to see which Australian businesses might join their ranks,” Ms Lewis-Smith said.

Technology industry group TechSydney, CEO, Dean McEvoy, welcomed the announcement.

“We’re pleased to see the NSW Government encouraging expertise from Silicon Valley to come out to Sydney. Sydney’s tech ecosystem is booming, it’s the centre of the tech industry in Australia and we welcome the opportunity to showcase the wealth of talent we have on offer to the world,” Mr McEvoy said.

LAUNCH Festival will draw international experts and capital to Australia and boost the NSW innovation brand on the world stage.  The event should see Australian businesses launch their start-up, raise funds and learn skills to help them build a company that will prosper.

NSW is home to 64 per cent of Australia’s technology start-ups and is known as ‘Australia’s innovation powerhouse’. In 2013 the NSW Government unveiled ‘Innovate NSW’, a four-year, $6.7 million scheme aimed at backing start-ups.

BESydney is the bidding agency tasked with securing global business events to NSW. The NSW Government via Destination NSW, the NSW Department of Industry and the Department of Finance, Services and Innovation, partnered with the organisation to help secure LAUNCH Festival to Sydney.
