Sydney to shine at IMEX Frankfurt

Thursday 14 May 2015

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) will bring a little Sydney sunshine to Europe, exhibiting alongside International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) and Business Events Australia at this year’s IMEX tradeshow, 19-21 May in Frankfurt.

Sydney will welcome tradeshow visitors to true Australian hospitality on stand B320 to learn more about the city’s bright and exciting future, including the latest on the ICC Sydney development.

“BESydney is, as always, excited to be part of IMEX Frankfurt. Sydney is so much more than its icons and we’re thrilled to represent our amazing city. The growth of Australia’s truly global city has been phenomenal over the past few years and, as we eagerly anticipate the opening of our fantastic new convention and exhibition precinct late next year, the city has never been more alive,” said BESydney CEO, Lyn Lewis-Smith.

“In preparation for our December 2016 opening, the ICC Sydney team has developed a range of interactive marketing tools that allow buyers and clients to experience the multipurpose venue from anywhere in the world,” added ICC Sydney CEO, Geoff Donaghy.

The international community will be treated to a first-hand look at the new ICC Sydney via a cutting-edge model display and virtual animated tour of the world-class venue.

In an IMEX Frankfurt exclusive, BESydney and the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) will launch the results of Sydney’s latest economic impact research at the Sydney media conference (see details below). This latest study, Asian incentive events in New South Wales: expenditure and retail impact, analyses the corporate incentive market in Asia and follows BESydney’s 2014 leading investigation into the accurate measurement of ‘new money’ to destinations that host conferences.

Dr Deborah Edwards and Dr Carmel Foley from UTS will present the study at the Sydney media conference on Wednesday 20 May. Both Dr Edwards and Dr Foley, along with Dr Katie Schlenker, were co-authors of the groundbreaking Beyond Tourism Research studies pioneered with BESydney.

Professor Mary O’Kane, BESydney Director and NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, will also speak at the media conference following her involvement in the Politician’s Forum, where the role of business events in economic and intellectual capital is further discussed. Professor O’Kane will speak on the importance of conferences to a knowledge-intense economy and society.

During and around the major global tradeshow, BESydney will also take part in a number of activities, including:

•    sponsoring both the ‘Sydney Seminar Room’ at IMEX’s Inspiration Hub – where ideas and innovation meet – and the Politicians’ Forum
•    hosting its fourth International Advisory Board (IAB) Forum and welcoming two new members to the group.

Additionally ICC Sydney’s Geoff Donaghy will chair a special session of the Politician’s Forum that will see tourism and trade ministers from Asia, Europe and the Americas meet to discuss the best models for success.

“Sydney is the ideal location for anyone wanting to connect, collaborate and innovate – it’s a thriving hub of commercial and creative activity. It really is the place to be,” added Ms Lewis-Smith.

“We’re culturally diverse, technologically savvy, inspired and innovative. We’re leading change and we’re inviting the world to join us. We’re the perfect partners for business and associations from around the world to host their meetings and events. Sydney has so much to offer – it isn’t difficult to see why the city shines as the meeting place of people, opinions and ideas.”

Sydney’s leadership role in the future of business events is further underlined as both Ms Lewis-Smith, Professor O’Kane and Mr Donaghy will speak at the Joint Meetings Industry Council Conference in Paris this week where they will discuss the benefits of business events to national and city economies.
