IT’S EARTH BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT: Sydney to host Digital Earth 2017

Friday 17 June 2016

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) CEO, Lyn Lewis-Smith, today announced Sydney has won hosting rights for the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) Symposium in April 2017.

Digital Earth is a global initiative to construct a comprehensive virtual representation of the planet spanning geographical, social and economic mapping. Since the concept was popularised in 1998 by Al Gore, commercial, social and scientific developments have included NASA World Wind, Microsoft's Bing Maps 3D and Google Earth.

Ms Lewis-Smith confirmed her organisation is securing conferences in strategic sectors that are aligned to emerging global industries.

“It’s fitting given Google Maps had its genesis in Sydney with mapping start-up, Where 2 Technologies, sold to Google in October 2004. Today Google Earth has applications that allow us to zoom across the sky into distant galaxies and constellations then browse 360-degree panoramas of Mars and the Moon. Touching back down on Earth, 3D technologies enable us to explore cities, buildings and structures, representing a set of capabilities we couldn’t imagine 50 years ago. Hosting this global event positions Sydney and Australia to enjoy a greater role in our digital future while boosting interest in STEM careers," Ms Lewis-Smith said.

Dr Zaffar Mohamed-Ghouse is the Convener of the ISDE Symposium 2017 and Locate 2017, and the Director of New South Wales (NSW) Business Development, Research and International Relations at CRCSI, an international research and development center. “This is a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for spatial professionals in Australia. Hosting the Digital Earth Symposium in Sydney is timely as our national and state governments discuss innovation through digital transformation and I am sure this event will offer an international perspective to it,” said Dr Mohamed-Ghouse.

The Symposium is expected to deliver $2.3 million in direct expenditure to the NSW economy and will be hosted at International Convention Centre Sydney, which opens in December 2016.
