15th World Conference on Lung Cancer wins CIM Magazine Best Meeting or Conference at Australian Event Awards

The world’s largest meeting dedicated to lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies to be held in the Asia/Oceania region has been named CIM Magazine Best Meeting or Conference for 2014 before an audience of event professionals at the Australian Event Awards Industry Night of Nights (11 November).

The conference, which attracted 5,000 lung cancer professionals from 93 countries to Sydney to investigate innovative ways to treat the disease, posted a record 2,300 medical research abstract submissions, with six Australian abstracts ranking in the top 100.

Held in October 2013, the conference had an estimated economic impact to New South Wales (NSW) of approximately $18 million and provided an opportunity for Australia to showcase its leadership in lung cancer research and policy – Australia is recognised as having the highest five-year survival rate in the world and is leading the way with ground-breaking anti-tobacco regulations that have put Australian policy at the forefront of the global fight against lung cancer and smoking-related disease.

Jointly accepting the award on behalf of the event was bid leader and conference co-president Clinical Professor Michael Boyer AM and CEO of Business Events Sydney Lyn Lewis-Smith, recognising the team effort that contributed to the conference’s overall success.

Clinical Professor Michael Boyer AM highlighted the impact that working hand-in-hand with BESydney and the PCO, International Conference Services Ltd (ICS), along with the many Sydney stakeholders, was a catalyst in the successful delivery of the event.

“Working with ICS and Business Events Sydney to deliver the World Conference on Lung Cancer was a great experience. It truly highlighted to me the importance of having an experienced and cohesive team to make events such as this one a success,” said Prof. Boyer.

“Sydney continues to be recognised as one of the world’s best places to meet. Our city is dedicated to providing a seamless and coordinated experience for event organisers and delegates alike, and this award recognises and rewards our continued passion for helping to make events shine in the harbour city,” added Ms Lewis-Smith.

Business Events Sydney congratulates the two recipients of this year's Lifetime Achievement awards – John Trevillian, the Assistant Director General, Office of Protocol & Special Events at NSW Department of Premier & Cabinet; and David Grant, who is widely acclaimed as one of Australia's leading event producers. Both John and David have made major contributions to business events internationally and nationally, and have been instrumental in cementing Sydney’s reputation as the event capital of Australia.

NSW was also named the Best Event State or Territory with the award accepted by the NSW Minister for Regional Tourism, The Hon. John Barilaro MP.
