Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre


The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre is one of Business Events Sydney's major partners, and has a demonstrated, long-standing commitment to responsible and forward-thinking environmental practices.


The Centre was one of the first two convention centres in the world to be accredited as a Green Globe benchmarked convention centre in 2007.


Green Globe is a certification program based on principles for sustainable development, agreed by some 182 Heads of State at the 1992 UN Rio Earth Summit and supported by Sustainable Tourism CRC. Its rigorous benchmarking program ranks businesses on energy and water consumption, use of paper and chemical products, waste sent to landfill, waste recycling and sustainability policies.


As part of its commitment to environmental leadership, the Centre introduced a very active environmental program in 2004 called Ecowise, delivering such initiatives as:

  • Diverting waste from landfill to make paper, green electricity and compost
  • Introducing a new lighting control system which automatically adjusts to the amount of lighting required
  • Replacing lighting in the Centre’s exhibition halls with new energy-efficient high bay lights connected to a digital control system
  • Installing water meters that monitor and control water usage and leaks, as well as touch-sensor taps and waterless urinals, saving 50 kilolitres a day or 18 megalitres a year


The Centre's efforts to establish itself as a green venue and bring about industry change have resulted in a number of awards and accreditations including:

  • Best Green Initiative, Exhibition and Events Association of Australia (EEAA) - 4 years running
  • ISO 14001:2004 Standard for Environmental Management Systems, 2010
  • Meeting and Events Australia Corporate Social Responsibility award, 2010, 2008, and inaugural award in 2007
  • Green Globe (Silver) Benchmarked Convention Centre, 2011 and 2009

Centre wins national environment award

For the fourth year running, the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre has won the Best Green Initiative category at the national Exhibition and Events Association of Australasia’s Annual Awards.
