40 years as a business events destination

1 December 2009

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) will continue to celebrate its 40 year as the official organisation responsible for promoting Sydney as a business events destination, this time at the European Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition (EIBTM) 2009 in Barcelona, Spain from 1 - 3 December 2009.

Mr Jon Hutchison AM, Chief Executive Officer of BESydney said EIBTM provided a strong opportunity to showcase the city’s major developments and upcoming events in the business events sector to European and international audiences.

“This year we celebrated BESydney’s 40th Anniversary. This was very significant and highlighted BESydney’s commitment and success in attracting international events to Sydney for 40 years.

“2010 promises to be the most exciting year ever for business events held in Sydney with BESydney having already confirmed 33 events, estimated to attract over 59,200 delegates.

“In 2010 Sydney will play host to many business events such as the 93rd Lions Clubs International Convention expected to attract 25,000 people and the 7th International Orthodontic Congress,” said Hutchison.

Tourism Australia and Business Events Sydney (BESydney) will be partnering at EIBTM to leverage Sydney as a world-class business events and incentives destination.

According to Hutchison, although the economic crisis is limiting business travel worldwide, Sydney is still continuing to attract major association and incentive events.

“The reason for this is simple; Sydney is Australia’s largest economy and a leading financial and commercial centre in the Asia Pacific. While it offers a stable and resilient economy and world class infrastructure, it also boasts a stunning harbour setting, world famous attractions, a cosmopolitan lifestyle, and an ever evolving calendar of festivals and events,” said Hutchison.

Among the upcoming festivals is Vivacity in January 2010, which is Sydney’s festival of innovation and creative ideas celebrating music, light, and art. The festival kicks off with the world famous fireworks display on Sydney harbor.

Hutchison said trade shows like EIBTM are important in helping Sydney maintain its profile as a top business events destination.

“It’s more important now, as a result of the global financial crisis, that we use these trade opportunities to demonstrate the value of Sydney as a destination for association events and an exciting hub for truly rewarding incentives.

“This is a message we’re looking to push at EIBTM and we hope to walk away with future prospects, stronger relationships and business written,” he said.
